The Rise of Anthony Edwards

From Netflix to Next Up

Anthony Edwards was just 20 years old when Hustle, a basketball movie on Netflix starring Adam Sandler released, and similar to how Edwards does on the basketball court, he took over every scene he was in, and the movie was a massive success. The movie was a great marketing move for Edwards, as it gave a mainstream look to his magnetic personality that’s extremely marketable. The Lebron James and Stephen Curry era of the NBA seems to be coming to a close, and the new wave of superstars appeared to be mostly international players, such as Giannis, Luka, Jokic, and  Embiid to name a few. The NBA was starved for a face of the league from America, and then came Anthony Edwards.

A Minnesota Basketball Rebirth

The last 20 years of Minnesota Timberwolves basketball has left Timberwolves fans yearning for something to cheer for. In fact, with the recent sweep of the Phoenix Suns, that marked the first time the Timberwolves made it to the 2nd round of the NBA playoffs since 2004, 20 years ago. Edwards is the face of a transformation of Minnesota basketball, accompanied by the recent defensive player of the year Rudy Gobert, another lockdown defender in Jaden McDaniels and sharp shooting seven-footer Karl Anthony Towns, the culture has officially shifted from the loveable losers in Minnesota, to a serious title contending team, led by the fire breathing Edwards. Antman as they called Edwards, has instilled a belief in the team, and city of Minnesota that is palpable. For proof of this, look at the recent Timberwolves trashing of the defending champion Denver Nuggets in game 2. It wasn’t just that Minnesota won that game, but they took over the city of Denver in the process, with Timberwolves fans chanting, “Wolves in four,” repeatedly. While the result of the series is to be determined, what is known is that for the first time in a long time, basketball in Minnesota is officially back on the map.

Team USA starter?

Anthony Edwards was recently named one of the players on the 2024 Olympics Team USA roster as expected, but the starting lineup remains in question. Team USA is littered with legends such as Lebron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Joel Embiid, Jaysom Tatum, Anthony Davis, and Kawhi Leonard. While this roster is hostric in its own right, international basketball is more competitive than ever as referenced to Team USA 4th place finish in the 2024 FIBA World Cup (with a much less talented roster although Edwards was on that team.) Coach Steve Kerr has a problem, albeit a good one to have, about who his starting 5 will be this summer. Especially if Anthony Edwards leads his Timberwolves to an NBA championship. If Anthony Edwards does win the NBA championship this season, can you leave the Finals MVP and budding face of the league out of the starting lineup?
